Your Business Dollars (Partial capo on 2nd (5,4,3) in E) E7 High rise, monetize, chuck the past before your eyes, Steel glass, upper class, dirty money builds it fast. A B E7 Free rent is a reasonable perk. Parking fee, exit fee, they can’t let your wallet be. Service charge, MasterCard, enslaving us isn’t hard. Your business dollars at work. News flash, succotash, catch it on the simulcast. Toxins in the water, Boss says, “Does it matter?” Our profits keep America free. Global this and global that, tell you where the goose it fat. Buying low and selling high puts a twinkle in their eye. Nothing in our world is free. Live rounds, going down, see how they all hit the ground. Mix up, cover up, little coffins adding up. Rules of engagement you see. Every time the fighting stops payment for the ammo drops. Near miss, terrorists, shouldn’t be mixed up in this. Just collateral damage casualties. Don’t ask, don’t peek, read it all on Wikileaks. Lips loose, law abuse, security a great excuse. The Enemy must never know the truth. Watergate, hesitate, who can we investigate? Free press has its price. Pay enough and they’ll be nice. They’ll blame it all on the youth. Tag Your business dollars at work (4x) Words and music by David B. Land of Stone and Steel E5 I played down in the City, my Friday night gallery show. My buddy said, “Let’s go walking.” I really should have said no. A E5 There was music in every alley, a 5-star motor parade. A Emaj7sus2 People talking louder and louder. Cops getting ready for a raid. A E5 I had a feeling it might be time for me to peel. F#11 B9sus4 E5 And get out of this land of stone and steel. (3x) Stone and Steel. My friend put his arm around a Japanese girl. I turned around and they were gone. A Knight and Bishop sat in their chairs. I started feeling like a pawn. A Hummer limo stopped at YJ’s, the King and Queen stepped out. There were bulges and watchful eyes. What’s all this about? Another angel gave me a sip and said, “How does it feel? It’s your passport to this land of stone and steel.” (3x) Stone and Steel. Rain hit my face and I jerked awake behind that Japanese girl. I was holding tight on a mini bike with her gang from the underworld. But Hell’s Angels don’t shop at thrift stores or glue trinkets to their seats. No, this gang was having too much fun as we roared on down the street. We were going too fast for me to jump, so I just dug in my heels. And prayed I’d survive this land of stone and steel. (3x) Stone and Steel. We all piled into a cellar. It must have been quarter to 4:00. The guy at our earlier show greeted me, opened the stage door. My friend’s on stage with a vintage Les Paul, the King was in the front row. They gave me a Mossman and a shot of whiskey and sat down for a private show. The Queen dropped a Ben Franklin in the tips, gave a little squeal. Said, “Sing us something about the land of stone and steel. (3x) Stone and Steel. Words and Music by David B. Where The Hippies Go (capo on 5th fret in C) C harp G C G I was looking around for colleges with educational reform. Em C D I visited Sarasota, where the beaches were so warm. Em C G C Clean-cut kid, straight-A student. The cabbie shook his head, “Oh! No, D C G Son, that’s where all the hippies go. There was cannabis on the balconies, discussions late at night. “Nietzsche is pietzsche” on the bathroom wall. & it was spelled just right. Philosophy and poetry, skinny dipping when the moon was low, cause that’s where all the hippies go. January without jackets even in a sudden squall. Kierkegaard, Thoreau, George, Ringo, John and Paul. Avant-garde uncensored, we savored life real slow, cause that’s where all the hippies go. harp solo Our tie-dye we made in buckets, rubber gloves and rubber bands. The Whole Earth Flag was our roadmap. We marched for peace in Viet Nam. Consecrated nonconformists. We looked the same from head to sandaled toe, Cause that’s where all the hippies go. Crossing Georgia was our big problem, where the Confederate Flag still flew. Our mural-painted van, would be stopped and searched we knew. When cops saw Gandalf fighting the Balrog, they’d wave us on real slow, Cause that’s where all the hippies go. Now my gray hair is in a ponytail. My Harley’s parked outside. Organic food is in my garden, and another crop besides. Who needs assisted living, when our commune has hedge fund dough. Cause that’s where all the hippies go. Words and music by David B. The Fire Warden (capo 5th fret in G) Em C G D World War II, in great London Town, Six hundred planes each night raining death down. Firebombs at first will light their way. A fire warden’s shift won’t end till it’s day. Sundown brings sirens. The shelter’s packed tight. Blackout so pure, no hand torch in sight. Christmas in the Tube. Better save your spot. The Blitz will continue, like it or not. Chorus C G D Up to the rooftops again. Pouring on water and sand. C G D Em Fire from the sky and the city alight. C D G So up to the rooftops again. Jerry still targets churches and homes, Hospitals and my St. Paul’s dome. Parachute mines hang in the street Then explode and kill those still on their feet. chorus We have no planes that can fly in the dark. The Yanks sit on gunpowder and wait for a spark. But we’ll put out the fires and do what we must. Antiaircraft guns roar and in each other we’ll trust. But I’ve never seen it bad as last night. 1,000 incendiaries on this cathedral alight. Blood red smoke held the city all night. But dawn showed that St. Paul’s was somehow alright. Chorus Words and music by David B. Hakan © 2013 All Rights Reserved 5-14-2013

Solid Gone 04:19
Solid Gone (capo 2nd fret in F# and partial on 4th 5,4,3) G -F-C (rocking) There’s a storm on the horizon coming for everyone. It’s a long way off, but you know it will come. No, you can’t stop it, can’t dodge it anyway, But you can turn around and pretend it’s a nice sunny day. Nice sunny day. For some it comes with lightning, a crashing hurricane. Some just go to sleep one night in a gentle rain. But when their souls rise into that thunderhead They know they’ve left the living for the dead. Chorus D C2 G F-C When that day arrives when I’ve written down my last song. My last song. You can’t count on much (brother, sister, honey) but you can count on this. I’m solid gone. Solid Gone. For so long I just dig a pit and settled right on in. I chained myself with payments. I worked with a grin. Disaster could strike anytime, so I grabbed a little more. I turned the key in the lock, safe behind that door. Safe behind that door. Some might call it madness, but it’s not a waste of time When I take the stories of my life and sing them with a rhyme. When the best part of your life stays behind the closet door, You have to ask yourself, Friend, what are you living for. Living for. chorus They say you’ve got to be careful. It’s a big, bad world. Stay away from that whisky. Don’t wink at those girls. Take your time. Take it easy. Take a little break. But you better live your life, Sonny, before it’s too late. Before it’s too late Maybe there’s an answer to the riddle of our time. What I give out to the world will always be mine. I can give that tough love. I can give a second chance. But I’m gonna turn that music up and dance, dance, dance. Chorus Words and music by David B. Hakan © 2013 All Rights Reserved 5-14-2013

The Bridge 04:15
The Bridge (Capo on 5th in C) G D Brian was just starting a delicate song C at a camp in Winfield, Kansas G D when a freight train came along. We couldn’t hear a note / from that funky harp guitar We threw curses at that train whistle / but they wouldn’t go that far. Then inspiration struck us like a hammer on a spike We could silence that whistle till forever and a night. It would be four miles long from banner to south pine But that whistle would blow for the very last time refrain C - G - D - Em - C - D - G The bridge, the bridge, the bridge, the bridge, The bridge that bluegrass built. 20,000 regulars and 100,000 more who call the Walnut Valley their home and so much more started fundraising with banjos and mandolins concert across the country, the money rolled on in. Concrete from Iola, rebar from Garnett gravel from Kincaid, all donated you bet. It took them 2 full years, but Sante Fe said OK That train got switched to higher ground to a Bluegrass parade. refrain A red-haired mom was yelling at her teenage girl like only that right of passage can prompt in this world When the call came from Stage 5, it finally was their turn Banjo in her hand, her daughter’s fiddle began to burn. They raced each other madly to an accelerando then a gently song on her fiddle brought a tear and a glow. refrain Now on stage 11 we listen to songs penned by pickers in the campground not dead Englishmen. When the trains come into town we all woo woo happily cause instead of A#Diminished it’s always the key of C. Woo Woo. refrain Woo Woo...The bridge that bluegrass built. Words and Music by David B. Fire Creek Kiss (Partial capo on 2nd (5,4,3) in E) E B A When the night sets in When the winter falls Blankets to our chins Candlelight adorns our walls Thru wind and stone Thru light and shadows tall Like water lightly thrown Over Fire Creek Falls We share a gentle kiss. Refrain E A B A Fire Creek kiss helps us look to our tomorrows Fire Creek kiss to chase away our sorrows Remember this. We will always have that Fire Creek E kiss. In the city gray The wind is so cold. Working, working another day Same routine getting old. That mountain meadow is fading Into memory. But this vow we’re living Is a sweet melody That leads to a gentle kiss. Refrain Fire Creek kiss. (4x) Words and music by David B. Hakan © 2014 All Rights Reserved 2-13-2014

True-Hearted Friend (capo on 4th fret in B) B harp G D I wanted a bike to take me far. G C and new horizons, so I wished upon a star. On Sunday mornings, my dad and I would ride. I’d try to get us lost on a way I’d never tried. He’d turn us around when it was time. I was never scared. We’d make it home just fine. refrain G D G C What I learned in the end, is that all I wanted in this world, G D G was the love of a true-hearted friend. My young heart fell for a gorgeous girl. Revolution was loose in our world. She never failed to turn men’s heads. All I saw was fantasy instead. The wild times turned flat as shallow water and became harder to explain to young daughters. refrain From the first time I felt a sound so sweet, I wanted to bring a hall to their feet. I’d drive all day. I didn’t care. Lots of practice to my cats on the stairs. Our stages, they were good and they were bad. But I found the best friends I’ve ever had. refrain Words and music by David B. Hakan © 2015 All Rights Reserved 2-1-2015

Live and Not Learn (Capo on 2nd in A) A I text Beretta when I learn of a fire. D We rendezvous as the flames reach higher. A She hacks a Wi-Fi like trying on shoes. E We post online for the six o’clock news. True we feel sorry for the ones who get hurt By the carelessness of lazy jerks. It’s just good to know other people get burned. We’re not the only ones who live and not learn. Refrain D A D Live and not learn. Live and not learn. Live and not learn. E A We’re glad when it’s someone else’s turn to live and not learn. Our tow truck’s cab is cosy and warm As Beretta looks out on a winter storm. We get a dispatch from the triple A. We’ll work all night right into the day. People stand around and shake their head. They know they should have known better instead. We just hook’em up and drag’em away. Better them than us oh any day. refrain Break (to refrain) Folks call from the Lake. Car’s sinking fast. Beretta shakes her head. Let’s give it a pass. Been raining for days. Ground’s soggy with muck. 4-wheel drive doesn’t guarantee luck. I hook it up anyway and say a prayer. I guess I should’ve worn warmer underwear. The muddy slope gives way. It’s now my turn. But I just hate it when I halfta live and not learn. refrain Live and not learn. Live and not learn. More Time With You D G - A Last week I lit a candle for our first kiss that night. It’s flame was proud and tall, G A - D - A so warm and bright. G D Now I’m buying more candles G D - A and more matches, too. G D I’m clearing off my calendar A D A to spend more time with you. You must have seen that candle reflected in my eyes. ‘Cause you grabbed me and kissed me much to my surprise. Now I’m running out of candles. But I don’t count anymore. I just wait for that knocking that means you’re at my door. Now we sit in a dark room. Each candle lit adds its light. Like the breaking of morning our new love turns so bright. Now we’re buying more candles and more matches, too. We’re clearing off our calendars. I want more time with you. Words and Music by David B. Hakan © 2015 All Rights Reserved 4-15-2015

Caturday 04:18
Caturday (partial capo on 3rd fret 65432; partial capo on 5th 432) G13 F13 C The coffee is warm. Sunlight peeks through my window. I should really get out of bed, but I have to stay. ‘Cause there’s a little guy fast asleep in my lap. But that’s alright, ‘cause it’s Caturday. Refrain Gmaj7 Cmaj7 C There’ll be plenty of mornings for rushing around, Going crazy, running late. Gmaj7 Cmaj7 Gmaj7 Cmaj7 Right now my world is warm. And I’ll sip it slow Gmaj7 Cmaj7 C And enjoy one more Caturday. Well it’s lunchtime and I’m still in my robe. Nowhere I have to be, just puttering around. We might lie down on the floor by that big sunspot, Or watch the birds through the window hopping on the ground. Refrain Now I’m cooking from scratch. I’m never lonely. That is unless I’m cooking vegetarian. My furry friend is singing lest it slip my mind To put a morsel down for him again. Refrain Words and music by David B.
